Intro and Class List

Boozhoo!

My name is Ms. Espinosa and this is my 3rd year teaching at Anishinabe Academy. I received my teaching license from Augsburg College, and am currently working on a Master’s Program there, too! I am very excited to be teaching first grade; it is a wonderful year of growth. This year, your child will be learning many new things. We will focus on counting to 120, addition and subtraction, coins, telling time, and other important math concepts. We will also become confident readers and writers in first grade!

I firmly believe a strong partnership with families is the best way to increase student achievement. At home, you should be reading at least 20 minutes a night with your child. Set a timer and let the fun begin! Your child can read to you, to a sibling, or listen to someone else read! Learning “sight” words is also an important part of becoming a good reader. Your child can make flashcards of these important words and practice them each night for homework. Writing letters to a loved one and journaling are great options for homework as well. You can also practice basic addition and subtraction facts with your child.

If you need to contact me, the best way is through my school email: alana.espinosa@mpls.k12.mn.us. I check this every morning and evening before I leave. If you need to call me, please call the office at 612-668-0880 and they will transfer you to me, as I do not have a direct line in my classroom. Finally, you can send a note to school with your child (providing they remember to give it to me). I ask that if you have any transportation changes for your child, you contact the main office in the morning so we can make sure they arrive home to you safely.

As always, volunteers are welcomed and encouraged in our classroom to join in on the wonder of 1st grade. You could read a story, smudge with us at morning circle, share cultural knowledge, or help with classroom activities. Your child would be thrilled to see you, and it is important that they know you value their education, too! Call or email if you are interested in visiting room 136. I’m looking forward to an exciting year of fun and growth!

Miigwech,

Ms. Espinosa
